we love snoop dawg even if she hasn't quite mastered "come".  The wireless fence system has curtailed her running to the neighbors.

Hi Ryan, Just curious what the term "bird in mouth singles" is all about and what part does it play in teaching multiple retrieves?

Bird in Mouth singles are the first of 3 steps to teaching the "mechanics" of running multiple marks.......We start by making her pick up one marked single and then hold that bird in her mouth at the line while she marks the next single.......After that bird is down......I will then take the bird from her mouth and then send her for the next bird........The delay that is created by making her  hold the bird while she marks another is what helps her learn the mechanics of delivering a bird and being sent for another.........When she is performing this exercise up to par then and only then will we continue with the process of teaching doubles.......

A "Warmed Up" mark is a mark ran as a single first and then repeated as the memory bird of a double or triple........

Ryan,

We are very excited about picking up a puppy Saturday. SInce I haven't received my book from Christmas yet I have some questions. Generally I am looking for the "10 Commandments" of Long Hollow puppy training. We as a family need to know the absolute must do's and must NOT do's when raising a gun dog. If you have a list great, much detail is probably not required.

Thanks.

I'll take the answer off the air.

Puppy Hood - Form 2 months to 6 months of age...

Dos and Don'ts to the early stages of raising your Long Hollow Retriever puppy.

Dos

1. Socialization - Daily play time with kids and adults... Walks on leash... Traveling in a vehicle... Nature walks...

2. Create Structure - Simple obedience with treats... Crate training... House breaking... Teach limits... Always work to teach your youngster it's place in your pack...

3. Introductions - Gunner-thrown marks... Gunfire (at a distance)... Retrieving (land and water)... Lead steadiness... Birds... Upland hunting...

4. Games - 3 hand casting with treats... Walking singles... Multiples in the yard...

5. Discipline before affection... Always!

Don'ts

1.  Don't take your mind off of your puppy... Unless it is in int's crate or kennel...

2.  Don't play Tug a' War...

3.  Don't let your puppy around other strange dogs until your puppy is completely vaccinated...

4.  Don't give affection until after your puppy is being disciplined... Or behaving properly...

5.  Don't leave food and water readily available to your puppy... This will help house breaking...

6.  Don't make daily retrieving sessions too long... Always leave your puppy wanting more...

7.  Don't spay or neuter your puppy until they are completely done growing...

8.  Don't talk to your puppy too much... At this age you will only teach your pup to ignore you...

9.  Don't set your puppy up for failure... Always build on success...

10. Don't be a follower... Always be you pups leader!

Hey Ryan,

I started the toe-hitch with Beau today.. Did not go nearly as well as I had hoped. I dont know if it was the was the way the hitch was setup or if I just need to hit the gym but  I was pulling hard enough to make Beau slide on the table. Even with all this pressure on his toes, he would only turn his head to the side and whimper, not the ouch reaction that I have read and been told about.. Im hoping that you can give me some pointers, so that the next session of training might actually be somewhat productive in the whole process of force fetching a dog.. Thanks Sean

Hi Sean,

If you are using the hitch wrong it could be tough to illustrate the proper use on the forum...

I am training tomorrow... You should come up for the day...

Ryan,

I just picked up a Dogtra 200 NCP Gold ecollar and need some advice on  how to get started. What is the best source you used to learn how to condition dogs to the collar. I have searched the typical locations for videos, but none of them really explain the steps or the philosophy behind proper ecollar training. This collar has nick, continuous and pager. I have a feeling Cooper will be pretty sensitive to it so I don't want to mess him up with an improper start. I hope your fall is going well. We have already hunted a couple days in Idaho and got a few mallards. Nothing too exciting but I am glad it is hunting season again.
